About

Type faster. Measure it.

fasttypes is a free typing practice tool built around a simple idea: getting faster and more accurate at typing should be something you can measure, not just guess at.

Four ways to practice

Custom practice
Paste your own text, set your own timer.
Practice test
Random passage or pick a topic, numbers, punctuation, and beyond.
Beginners practice
Learn the keyboard, one row at a time.
Multiplayer
Race up to 5 other typists in real time.

Every mode tracks the same core numbers, words per minute, accuracy, mistakes, so your progress means the same thing wherever you practice.

Account optional

Create an account and your results, saved texts, and keyboard preferences follow you across sessions, and you'll show up on the leaderboard. Prefer to stay anonymous? Every mode works as a guest too, you just won't have a saved history or a rank.

How your score is measured

Every test on fasttypes uses the same rules, so a score means the same thing in every mode. A “word” is counted as five characters, spaces included, which keeps long and short words fair. Your words per minute (WPM) is the number of characters you typed correctly, divided by five, divided by the minutes you typed. Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that were correct. Mistakes never add to your speed, so the only way to a higher number is to type the right keys.

What you can practice

Timed tests run for 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 minutes, or any length you set, on passages picked at random so you can't memorize the text. Beginner practice teaches touch typing one keyboard row at a time, starting from the home row. Custom practice lets you paste your own text, notes, code, a speech, and add punctuation or numbers when you want something harder. Multiplayer puts you in a live race against other typists. The site and its practice texts are available in 45 languages.

Free to use

You can use every mode without paying and without creating an account. Running the site costs money, and we cover that with advertising rather than by charging for practice. Our privacy policy explains what is stored and how cookies are used.

Mistakes and corrections

Practice passages, translations and blog articles can contain mistakes. If you find a typo in a passage, a wrong translation, or a claim in an article that you think is out of date, tell us and we will fix it.
